Headquartered in Houston, Texas, ConocoPhillips stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "COP." ConocoPhillips is seeking applicants for a Technician role at the Research & Development Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.  This role's primary duties will be pertaining to operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of CFR Engines and CFR Engine control systems (CFR Engines are used to measure Octane and Cetane in gasoline and diesel respectively.).  Primary tasks are CFR engine operations, CFR Engine control system operations, and fuels testing. Troubleshooting of the CFR engines, CFR engine control systems, and the training of CFR Engine operators at ConocoPhillips facilities across the United States are expectations of the role after the training and validation of competency of a successful candidate.  The Octane Support group in Bartlesville operates as the "gold standard" for Octane and Cetane measurement for ConocoPhillips. Responsibilities The Technician may be responsible for providing a wide range of assistance in laboratories. This includes: 

  • Maintaining a safe laboratory working environment.
  • Operate CFR (Octane and Cetane) engines in the Auto lab as part of the Octane Group after validation of competency.
  • Use / Troubleshoot CFR Engine control system in the Auto lab.
  • Experimental system design in collaboration with scientist, including data acquisition and process controls.
  • Interfacing computer software (OPTO22) to control both lab built and commercial equipment for data acquisition. This includes use of computer programming capabilities (Excel and OPTO22).
  • Set up, calibration, and operation of laboratory equipment and software.
  • Data collection, organization and recording of experimental details.
  • Assisting in evaluation of experimental results for adjustment of conditions and identification of trends.
  • Development of Standard Operating Procedures and Lab Hazard Reviews.
  • Programming the computers using OPTO22 and Excel.
  • Electronics work on the lab equipment.
  • Travel could be 30% or more after proven ability associated with CFR engines.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Able to effectively work with a diverse cross section of people on a daily basis.  ConocoPhillips has 12 North American refineries; each refinery is required to measures octane by CFR Engine to certify each batch of Gasoline shipped out of the facility.  The successful candidate must be able to identify critical problems and opportunities and effectively move those items to the top of the priority list while maintaining good working relations with others who have pending issues.
  • Skilled at effectively working on several issues / tasks at the same time.
  • Analytical aptitude
    • Precision / detail oriented.
    • Quick at grasping new concepts and applying new skills.
    • Good analytical skills, diagnostic skills, organizational skills, and communications skills.
    • Ability to interpret trends in results and bring them to the attention of customer / supervisor.
  • General mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Data Base knowledge a plus.
  • Proven ability to self-start and work alone, as well as work within a team setting and to lead a team when appropriate.
  

 

Qualifications

  Basic/Required Qualifications 

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States on a regular full-time basis without restrictions.
  • A valid drivers license.
  • Able to read and comprehend the English language and fluently communicate orally and in writing in the English language.
  • Minimum of a 2-year technical degree in a science or science-related field and/or equivalent training and experience.

  • 2+ years experience with  electronic instrumentation and PLC (programmable logic controller) design, construction, and/or maintenance.
  • Strong mathematical ability.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability.
  • Ability / freedom to travel as needed on short notice (this may be up to 30% initially).
  • Ability to conduct multiple operations simultaneously.
  • Able to work standing for a two (2) hour period.
  • Able to lift a stationary weight of 45-lbs. from a floor to a bench level.
  • Able to lift a stationary weight of 10-lbs. from bench level to a shelf 18-inches above bench level.
  • Able to respond to sound and system fault light alarms.
  • Able to pour solvents from a 4-L bottle into smaller containers.
  • Able to manipulate high-pressure gas cylinders, use a cylinder cart, and attach a regulator to the cylinder using a wrench.
  • Pre employment drug screening is required.
  • All candidates must be eligible to qualify for a TWIC card (Transportation Workers Identification Credential) to gain access to secure areas of Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) regulated facilities and vessels.

 Preferred Qualifications 

  • Certifications in Electrical instrumentation & Controls; especially PLC based systems.
  • 2+ years experience in the use of advanced Excel software capabilities.
  • 4+ years of directly related work experience in a laboratory setting.
  • 4+ years experience with an electrical and/or instrumentation background.
  • 2+ years of fluids chemistry, lab scale testing and analysis.
  • 2+ years using / programming OPTO 22 PLC Control system.
